I think that a lot of the time acting is considered a profession for uneducated people. Anyone who has been involved in the business at any level knows this isn’t true: there are just as many dummies as in any other industry, but there is also a high quantity of astonishingly smart and academically driven celebs in the acting industry. Check out my five favorites here:
Portman received a BA in Psychology at Harvard. She also Guest lectured at Columbia, and co wrote two published scientific papers.
On attending college: “I don’t care if [college] ruins my career, I’d rather be smart than a movie star.”
Franco graduated with a BA from UCLA, and then attended NYU, Columbia, Brooklyn College, Yale, and warren Wilson College simultaneously for grad school working towards masters degrees and one PHD in art and literature. Franco also attended Rhode Island School of Design at one point.
On missing the 2011 Academy Awards to attend class at Yale: “I’m not gonna miss class to go and presume that I’m going to be nominated, but if you want to bring out a camera crew to Yale and wait and see if I get nominated, I’d be happy to step out of class and say I’m very grateful.”
Half of the troupe members met at Oxford University and the other half met at Cambridge University. One f the members, Graham Chapman, even received a medical degree from Cambridge.
Jeong attended Duke University and then received an MD from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill before getting famous.
On being an actor and a doctor: “Medicine is a hard-won skill, and acting can be a fickle profession, so I tried to be realistic. Now, I’m a spoiled actor. I get weekends off and hiatus weeks — time I never got as a doctor.”
Foster graduated Magna Cum Laude from Yale with a degree in literature. She can speak French and Italian, and understands Spanish and German.
On graduating: “I saw leaving college as an opportunity to do something different with my life. I always thought that becoming an academic was going to be my path.”
