I recently walked into the waiting room for a big audition and couldn’t help but be overcome with a sense of negativity. As I surveyed the room, I was shocked to find multiple groups gossiping about their fellow actors. Not only were these people being insensitive towards their colleagues, they were also being downright catty. I couldn’t believe that this is what professional actors were focused on prior to a major audition
As many of you are going to your first casting call, let this be a cautionary tale. Remember to be the graceful, polite and kind individuals we know you all are. Bad mouthing other actors is not only poor form, it will most likely get back to the casting director holding the audition. You would never want to ruin your chance at a role because of bad behavior!
If you find yourself in a similar situation, take the high road! I found a quiet seat in the corner, smiled at my competition and took time to review my script. By not engaging I was able to pay attention to my task at hand and ultimately perform my monologue flawlessly. Although I didn’t get the role, I left feeling proud for not succumbing to the pressure to gossip!
