Defining “The Callback”

Word of the Day: Callback!

After an initial audition you may receive a “callback”. You know you are supposed to be excited, but do you know what a callback means? Let’s break it down: A callback is an opportunity for the casting director and other individuals involved in the production to take a second look at your talent. A callback signals you did something right in your first audition whether it be you have the perfect look, a great personality or wowed them with a knockout performance.

What to expect in a callback!

  • A callback can take place right after your first audition, within a couple of days, a week or even a month later. You wouldn’t want to miss your chance so make sure to check your phone calls and emails often!
  • Don’t change anything from your initial audition unless you are told to do so by casting. They obviously liked what they saw the first time so try to recreate it exactly as you had done before. Also try to wear the same outfit or something very similar. If you have curly hair but wore it straight to the audition, make sure it is straight for the callback. You want to provide casting with the same experience.
  • At a callback there will most likely be more people in the room than at the initial audition. It is common for a producer, director, writer, etc. to sit in on the audition. Go in confident and expect to be performing for a larger group this time around.

Have you gotten a callback? Tell us about your experience in the comments section!
