Word of the Day: Slate

Slate – Introducing yourself on-camera at the beginning of a theatrical or commercial audition!

We’ve all been told how important it is to make a good first impression. To an actor, slating is just as vital! A good slate conveys your personality and is often the reason you get a callback or not. Though this seems simple, your slate should be rehearsed almost as much as your monologue.

You want your character to show when slating and come across as sincere as possible. Imagine that you are at an important dinner party and meeting the president of a major studio for the first time. How would you behave? I am hoping words like authentic, gracious and natural are coming to mind. Keep that in mind when you walk into the audition room. Picture yourself at that fancy party and slate like you’ve never slated before!
