As an actor your voice is your instrument, gift and livelihood. Therefore it is of utmost importance to take care of this vital source of talent. One of the best ways to do this is to eat right and well. The foods you eat and beverages you drink have a profound effect on the richness of your voice. Now, I am certainly no expert when it comes to health and nutrition, but I have been doing more research into wellness. I think these new found bits of wisdom will leave you, as well as your voice, feeling like a star!
- Hydrate – Fill up on water, herbal tea, and natural juices. These are excellent sources of good nutrition that will make you feel much more energized. Plus, these are beverages that your voice and belly will thank you for! They wet your whistle and have healing properties.
- Avoid Dairy – Dairy coats your throat and often creates mucus, which is not ideal for vocal quality. Take a break from milk, cheese, yogurt, and ice cream before a big show. I guarantee the tone of your voice will be better than some Ben & Jerry’s.
- Skip Alcohol and Caffeine – Carbonated and acidic beverages are incredibly drying and lead to a raspy, harsh voice. Not ideal for a long day on set using your voice.
Take care everyone, and let’s have every part of ourselves in good working order to become an actor.
