Build Your Character With My Public Speaking Tips

As a former competitive public speaker (nerdy, I know), I wanted to share a few tricks of the trade to help all of you as you perform for an audience. Making conscious eye contact and appropriate movements is key to becoming a better actor. Not only will these tips help you to get into character, I also guarantee that they will leave you feeling more confident in your day to day life!

1. Maintain eye contact for 3 to 5 seconds – this is the perfect amount of time to establish a connection without being uncomfortable or invasive. 3 t0 5 seconds builds trust. Give it a try!

2. Work the Stage – As an actor it’s important to move around and work the stage. Build interest by moving around the floor at appropriate times. Allow your character to develop through deliberate movements across the stage. Work both sides of the audience and allow your body to help tell the story. I guarantee confidence will ooze from your bodies strong presence.

3. Square Your Body – While you are making eye contact and moving around the performance space I want you to square your body with the audience. Stand proud and be conversational!
