Yesterday, I read an amazing article about finding your strengths. The article detailed research on how by applying our strengths we have the highest chance of performing at our very best. Though this notion can apply to all areas of your life, it can be especially beneficial for your acting career. It’s important to discover if your strengths lie in comedy or dramatic roles. Would you prefer to feel the rush of being on-stage or do you crave seeing yourself on film? Are you a natural at improv or do you like to be prepared? By analyzing and discovering your true strengths you can better hone in on the casting calls that are right for you!
To help you play to your strengths, here are a few ways to discover your gifts:
1. Ask Yourself – Take some time to journal and ask yourself a few questions. 1) What do I enjoy? 2) What do I value? 3) What am I best at? By answering these three questions you will develop a greater sense of self and become more aware of what you are truly good at.
2. Ask Others – Seek feedback from friends and family. Ask for those closest to you to share a story of when they thought you were at “your best”. Although, not pleasant, also ask when they thought you were at “your worst”. Getting constructive feedback is an important way to learn more about ourselves and what we need to work on. Try it out!
