Los Angeles is a field of dreams for an aspiring actor. Celebrities sipping drinks at the Chateau Marmont or cruising around the Paramount lot often come to mind when I think about Hollywood. While it can be glamorous, I know from first hand experience that it is also filled with fierce competition. It can often seem like everyone in lala land is trying to be “somebody”. Today, let’s zero in on how to find acting auditions in Los Angeles. I know you deserve to be that someone. After 5 years in LA, a few auditions, and two years at the biggest talent agency I have some tips to help you stand out in this sprawling metropolis.
1. Network – Los Angeles is all about who you know. Take the time to make genuine connections with people who could serve you and your career. Many relationships in this business are fleeting and artificial. However, I truly believe that people are looking for more and want to help those dedicated to the craft of entertaining. Do everything you can to meet people and build a rapport. Always follow up and show an interest in others.
2. Be in the Right Place – In order to build a rapport you need to be in the right place to meet the right people. Vary your networking opportunities. Spend time in cafes, attending acting workshops, and find writing rooms. You never know when or where you may meek the next Lena Dunham. Gravitate towards creative spaces and crowds to ensure you are meeting influential people. I have had some great conversations with talent working out of my local coffee shop.
3. Take Advantage – Los Angeles has a ton to offer in terms of getting into the entertainment industry. There are comedy troupes, hosting seminars, extra work, open mic nights, theatre, live tapings, etc. that you can participate in. Be a true student of the business and become a part of the community. The more opportunities you take advantage of the better your chances of finding auditions in Los Angeles.
