All of us here at ClaimFame love The Walking Dead. If there’s ever been a better show about the zombie apocalypse, we’ve never heard of it! But did you know that once upon a time, the stars of AMC’s hit show were aspiring actors just like you? It’s true! Here’s how just a few of your favorite survivors got their big breaks.
Daryl Dixon himself, Norman Reedus was working at a Harley-Davidson shop when a friend asked him at a party if he wanted to act in a play. While he had contributed visual art pieces to shows before, this was his first time actually being in front of an audience and performing. This chance encounter led to him working on one of Guillermo del Toro’s earliest horror movies and eventually to a breakout role in The Boondock Saints.
Even though he plays the southern sheriff Rick Grimes, did you know that Andrew Lincoln is actually English? Lincoln first started acting at age 14, and eventually began attending the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London. While he starred in many BBC dramas like This Life and Wuthering Heights and memorably appeared in the hit film Love Actually, The Walking Dead is his biggest role to date on the international stage.
Born in Korea, Steve Yeun first found the performing bug doing improv comedy at Kalamazoo College. His parents, wanting him to become a doctor or lawyer, said that they would give him two years after college to chase his performing dreams and prove to them that he could make a living at it. Considering Yeun is now one of the biggest names on The Walking Dead, it seems like everything turned out the way it should!
Before playing Maggie, Lauren Cohan was an American teenager growing up in the United Kingdom. Discovering acting while attending the University of Winchester, she began touring with a theatre company she and her friends started while at school. Splitting her time between London and LA, Cohan appeared in other spooky shows like Supernatural and The Vampire Diaries before making her big break in The Walking Dead.
Born in Iowa, Danai Gurira moved with her family back to their ancestral home of Zimbabwe when she was five years old. She returned to the US as an adult and began writing and performing her own plays about women and her African identity. Lupita Nyong’o even starred in her play Eclipsed on Broadway! While her biggest mainstream role has been Michonne on The Walking Dead, she continues to write and produce her own work.
