How to Be a Model

There is so much more to being a model than being able to smile at the camera. Modeling requires working long hours, handling rejections, and staying in shape to meet specific standards. But being a model can be one of the most satisfying careers out there for people who are fashion forward with a huge personality! We here at ClaimFame know how confusing breaking into the business can be, and have come up with some tips to help you achieve your fashionable dreams!

  1. Know what kind of model you want to be

Even more so than acting, modeling is an extremely segmented business. Before you start sending photos to every agency in town, figure out exactly what type of model you are. Are you a little larger than average? Consider being a plus-size model! Super tall? You’d probably be best as a runway model. This isn’t to say that you can’t be every kind of model, but you will find more success by staying specific when you start out.

  1. Get some pictures!

Since being a model means you will be seen by hundreds of people, you need to have a way to get your face in front of casting directors. Getting professionally taken photos may seem expensive, but the quality will make you stand out from the crowd. You’ll want to get a few different shots: headshots, full-body shots, different emotions. Wear clothes that show off your personality, but avoid anything too extreme or anything with logos. Don’t let your outfit upstage you! For more on getting great headshots, read here

  1. Submit to agencies

Once you have your pictures, it’s time to start submitting to agencies. Many agencies allow you to submit online, either via email or using an online form. Along with your pictures, you will also be asked to submit your height, weight, and other measurements. Don’t forget to follow up! Send an email a couple of days after you submit to make sure they have your info, but don’t go overboard and send something every single day. Some agencies may have open calls where you can go directly to the agents to apply. This can be more convenient, but you’ll still need your pictures and measurements! 1. Don’t get discouraged!

Modeling can be extremely tough. There are many, many aspiring models for a set number of jobs. It’s important not to get discouraged when you don’t get work! Keep putting yourself out there. You can’t get any gigs if you don’t submit!  Also, consider other types of modeling like hosting or spokesmodeling at conventions. These can be lucrative side jobs that will also bolster your resume.

Deciding to become a model is one of the best decisions you can make in your career. While it may be a tough world, there is great reward for those who stick with it. Stay tuned to ClaimFame for tons of modeling casting calls!
